The author, Steven Salzberg, Prof. of Medicine and Biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University, formerly the Horvitz Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, says:
I think this move is shockingly short-sighted. The University of Florida is moving backwards while the rest of the world moves ahead.
Save UF CISE 
Such awful press about our beloved school. How has the Dean not announced her resignation or been asked to step-down by the President?
Anyone know what is Dean Abernathy’s political affiliation? If shes a Democrat this would be shocking and highly disappointing. If shes a Republican/TeaPartier, its is about what is to be expected as they have been on a massive attack on education since 2010.

I support stopping this ridiculous de-finding of CISE at UF. Also, can the owners of this site ensure links open IN A NEW WINDOW or TAB? You don’t want to take viewers to another page and not make it easy to come back.

I cannot believe this. Does Florida want to remain a backwater state? Hey – wait a minute – Ole Miss has a computer science department department (http://www.cs.olemiss.edu/). So I guess Florida moves from 49 to 50. Maybe the Gators can call back Tebow to regain some of that magic.
We were able to save the Physics Department at the University of Northern Iowa this spring from a similar administrative proposal by getting the facts out and rallying support from students, alumni and the scientific and education communities. This proposal at U. Florida seems to be at yet another level in terms of poor, short-sighted decision making. Computer Science is a critical area for economic development and the U. Florida program seems very productive and to have very high quality. Great work in getting the word out and building such a solid case. Hopefully, it will lead to the right conclusion.
If the CS establishment want to fight this by getting the facts out, they should start by writing to Forbes and correcting this piece. Like the guy in the Monty Python movie, the department isn’t dead yet. It’s embarrassing to see this kind of hyperbole.
