I whole-heartedly oppose the decision to close the CS department at the University of Florida. Computer Science is a corner-stone of the 21st century economy, and also a really, really cool thing to study. It’s one of those amazing things which is both financially rewarding as well as fun! Hopefully, the leadership of this school will come to their senses (after this tremendous response from across the web) and keep this wonderful field open to all of their students.
Sadly, this decision will end up hurting Florida in the long run since it will likely mean the loss of talented students, researchers and jobs for years to come. The message is loud and clear: Florida doesn’t care about academics, education, research or the sciences. We don’t care if the technological revolution leaves us behind and we are willing to let it do just that.
I’ve already voiced in on my own blog. Follow along at franktheitprof.wordpress.com As a CIS alum (1977), I am totally oppose this move by UF. But you can read more on my blog.
